I'm not a video watcher, but I do read Total Rec as well, and she does make some good points on how many newsletter writers seem to recommend the exact same thing: not different items from the same designer, but the same item. Like, it is funny how that same Juju Vera pendant is EVERYWHERE. Not a different necklace, just that same hippie art teacher one.
'Dupe' doesn't really mean anything anymore, so sure, the Old Navy one is a dupe. No one really thinks it's the same quality, it's 'the look for less'.
And yes, I'm a retail salesperson and I do like industry stuff!
Totally Recommend’s Kick Flare Kick-Back post last year opened my eyes to affiliate marketing. I didn’t know about it on Substack, despite working in fashion and advertising for most of my adult life (design not marketing). I did notice the ubiquity of praise lavished on certain pants. And I recognize it now on other merch. I get it. I learned from your video. I still subscribe to many newsletters. I love yours (just subscribed)! But I do see them differently.
This was very informative. When I joined substack those pants where everywhere. It was kind of annoying, but I think it has more to do with people trying to figure out (and game) the algorithm for engagement vs shady marketing practices.
Thank you for this. The piece you are referencing has always rubbed me the wrong way for a variety of reasons. Also, slightly unrelated, why are we worried about the consumers who are buying $900 pants getting ripped off? They are buying $900 stretchy pants!
Loved the video, very informative! Your take on things is great. I really enjoy your Substack & look forward to the odd video if you are comfortable with it! Lastly, can’t when to visit your store wnen I’m in Toronto 💖

It's a fairly narrow view on a very complex subject! Thank you for watching :) and also lol at the last comment - correct!!!
For me the bigger issue was the lack of size range, but again: I know that's really expensive to do from the jump!
